Production diseases of the transition cow: Milk fever and subclinical hypocalcaemia

چکیده
introduction Milk fever and subclinical hypocalcaemia (total blood calcium ≤2.0 mmol/l) are the most important macromineral disorders that affect transition dairy cows. It is important to realise, that of all the production diseases experienced by dairy cattle, milk fever is related to the occurrence of many other problems, the timing of which would suggest that milk fever was at least one (if not the only) predisposing factor that lead to a second transition or early-lactation cow disorder.

A herd health approach to dairy cow nutrition and production diseases of the transition cow.
This paper presents a practical, on-farm approach for the monitoring and prevention of production disease in dairy cattle. This integrated approach, should be used in an interdisciplinary way by farmers, veterinarians, nutrition advisors and other relevant professionals for the improvement of animal health and welfare and producer profitability. The key areas that form the basis for this approa...
متن کاملEffect of calcium supplementation on milk production and hypocalcaemia
A dairy farmlet trial carried out in Central Taranaki in 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 examined the effects of calcium (Ca) supplementation (110-180 g/cow of fine limeflour drenched daily between calving in August and mid-mating in December) on serum Ca, incidence of milk fever and milksolids (MS) production at stocking rates of 2.5, 3.2, 3.7 and 4.2 Jersey cows/ha. Pasture Ca contents in spring were...
متن کاملEffect of Anionic Salt and Highly Fermentable Carbohydrate Supplementations on Urine pH and on Experimentally Induced Hypocalcaemia in Cows
The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of dietary grain on calcium homeostasis. Six rumen-fistulated dairy cows with 3 or more previous lactations and no history of parturient paresis were randomly assigned to a sequence of diets in a crossover study with 4 periods of 10 days each. Dietary treatments were: A control ration consisting of wrap grass silage alone (1), the con...
متن کاملThe monitoring, prevention, and treatment of milk fever and subclinical hypocalcemia in dairy cows.
The periparturient cow undergoes a transition from non-lactating to lactating at calving. The animal is tremendously challenged to maintain calcium homeostasis. Those that fail can develop milk fever, a clinical disorder that is life threatening to the cow and predisposes the animal to a variety of other disorders. Guidelines for monitoring the incidence of hypocalcemia and methods for treating...
متن کاملA novel model to explain dietary factors affecting hypocalcaemia in dairy cattle.
Most dairy cows exhibit different degrees of hypocalcaemia around calving because the gestational Ca requirements shift to the disproportionately high Ca requirements of lactation. Ca homeostasis is a robust system that effectively adapts to changes in Ca demand or supply. However, these adaptations often are not rapid enough to avoid hypocalcaemia. A delay in the reconfiguration of intestinal ...
